–UPDATE –

As of July 9, 2008 Rogers has LOWERED their rates!!!  Read about it HERE

Again,  a long time since writing, my new job, although rocking the house does take a great deal of my time and effort.  But, it was in doing that job that I learned some truly awesome news!  Our company is about to ditch Bell and go with Rogers for our cellular service.  One of the reasons is that Rogers is GSM, and their phones can be used all over the world, while Bell’s CDMA network… well lets face it… both sucks, and blows.   We as a company have needed data devices, and were putting off getting blackberries etc, now we’re glad we waited.  When I called Rogers yesterday to place our order, I asked about the data rates.  Having priced out our solution last month with blackberries I was ready to wince once again at the ludicrous price of data for so little, well… get a hold of this.  Rogers has drastically reduced the pricing of data for all Windows Mobile, Blackberries, PC Data Cards and the iPhone.  They have two major price plans, the first I wrote down while I was talking to him, the second, which is a flex plan I am going by memory for.

$30.00 – 300 meg
$50.00 – 500 meg
$60.00 – 1 Gig
$80.00 – 3 Gig
$100.00 – 6 Gig

For any of you that have had data previously…. are you freaking out right now?  You should be able to switch your data plan to one of these new rates.  Rogers also has a FLEX rate that is similar to their PC Data card rate.  Those rates I didn’t write down, but they are very similar.  Basically as you hit the various tiers, you are automatically moved to the next tier, instead of paying some outrageous overage charge.  I know that the 100 plan on the flex is 5 gig instead of 6…. if someone knows the details on the flex, email it to me and I’ll include it.

I am so relieved to see that Rogers is starting to fall into line with the rest of the world.  I would like to see improvements to these plans as time moves forward.  What does amuse me is how much damage these plans will do to Bell and Telus.  With rates like these available for all data devices they will be forced to lower their prices or face a mass exodus of data users to the superior and BTW faster network.  It amuses me that Bell is still running ads that say they are the fastest network in Canada when they know full well that Rogers has a substantial 3G network already in place that they haven’t talked about before the launch of the iPhone.

–Update–
Rogers still do not have these plans listed on their website as far as I can tell, you will have to call in to ask about them.  They might want to hire a webdesigner or two to bring their site up to date :)

–Update 2–

Trolling around the internet has revealed THIS: Basically, the plan mentioned earlier will work with the iPhone, but it looks like an even better plan is here for the iPhone only, all of this is good news for both iPhone users, and other Rogers data devices….

–Update 3–

This has actually been my most read blogpost ever!  Thanks everyone.  I did write a follow up here
