Well look out online world here I come!
Many years ago I was in high school, a nerdy high strung guy who just loved this new thing called the internet. I made so many friends online, had buds all over the world. What did we all have in common… television.
The internet really took off for me when I discovered a little known show called Family Guy. Trolling the internet trying to find information on this show lead me to a room on DalNET called #Futuramaepisodes From there, people online began trading back and forth episodes of Family Guy & Futurama. As time went on other shows began appearing. At first they seemed geeky enough, Star Trek, Earth Final Conflict, Quantum Leap, but then, over time more and more and more shows.
I fell away from the people over at DalNET after Dal decided to not allow file sharing channels any more. I remember being disappointed, but understanding the reasons why.
Today, with torrents, and newsgroups, its easier than ever before to find this content. I remember saying back then, that the studios needed to embrace the internet. They needed to offer up their material online, so that we could watch it on OUR time, not theirs. Over time the PVR came out, and people could digitally record, and watch what they wanted to later, and even more time passed and ITunes came along, and you could buy the shows for 2 bucks.
Now, many shows are up free, online, on the host networks. ABC, NBC, CBS… JOOST!
This blog is going to talk about television shows, and technology related stuff that I find of interest. I will try not to be ranty, or what have you.
I am the same malocite that edited Family Guy on tvtome.com when it was around, and I am the same malocite that continued to edit over at tv.com after John sold the domain to cNet. I hate tv.com for the record, because they felt I wasn’t doing a good enough job editing the show.
Well, my old blog postings are a matter of record over there, and I suppose you can read them if you want. I really don’t care anymore. When tv.com took away that show from me it was like I lost a part of myself. I had, afterall been editing Family Guy for at least 3 or 4 years (the exact time now alludes me) and this process actually turned me off the internet as a social tool.
I was a latecomer to myspace (I have since left there for Facebook) and an even late comer to blogging. I tried a few times, but could never figure out what I wanted to blog about.
Then it came to me, in the car the other day. What I loved about online community was talking about TV, and being a small part in something I loved. After losing tv.com, the good people over at tvrage.com asked me to come write for them, which I did for a short while, but the hurt of tv.com was still fresh, and it had taken away the magic for me that I had felt with tvtome. Don’t get me wrong, I love tvrage, and use them daily for information, but I just didn’t feel like contributing like I had in the past.
But now, here I am. I’m going to talk about tv shows that I love, and hopefully maybe turn you on to one.
The world has changed, and believe it or not, the pirates at #Futuramaepisodes changed it.
Once upon a time, a show got poor ratings, and it was canceled, and that was it. But the internet changed all that. People were sharing these episodes all over university campuses. They were buying the dvds, getting them as gifts. More and more and more people began to be exposed to Family Guy that never saw it when it was new, and then… bang. Its renewed, after YEARS, Fox brings back the show, and we have enjoyed more episodes than ever.
People now get excited by the internet. The studios are beginning to make some money showing them online and selling advertising.
The Daily Show, Colbert, Lost over at ABC, and I am sure many more.
This blog of course, is based out of Canada, so we get blocked sadly from the US sites, so I will report on the Canadian accessibility. I would ask that international users, from the US and the UK etc, please post YOUR links to where these episodes can be viewed in YOUR country (legally).
I hope you enjoy the blog, I know that I will.
